Robert G. Whitman, 95 passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in New Boston on January 27, 2019. The oldest son of Ruth and George Whitman, he was born in Pittsburgh, PA on Nov. 20, 1923.
Bob served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps; he was taken prisoner by the Germans and spent the balance of the war in POW camps. After returning safely home he attended Harvard, graduating in 1949. He then began his career as a Naval Officer and served on a ship on the China Sea during the Korean Conflict. After retiring from active Naval Service he attended BU Law School. He retired from the Navy as a Commander in 1983. He practiced law for many years in Exeter, Manchester, and New Boston.
Bob was a long-time member of the New Boston Community Church, singing in the choir and serving as an Elder. He was an excellent athlete. He especially enjoyed golf and was playing regularly through his late 80’s. Music was always an important part of his life; from solos as a boy soprano to the Whipple Free Ukesters. Bob was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and a terrific bridge player.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Betsy Whitman; his daughter, Liz and her spouse Alyce; his son, Paul and his wife Rhoda; his daughter Mary. He is also survived by his loving step family, Elissa and her husband Andy; Gregg and his partner Rob; and Adam and his wife Sabrina. Bob was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and is survived by his sisters, Barbara and Anne, and his brother Tom. The family would like to thank Bob's wonderful care-givers, especially Denise, Helen and Lisa, and the dedicated Hospice team, for their loving care and assistance.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, February 9 at 2 p.m. at the New Boston Community Church with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bob’s favorite charities: Doctors without Borders or the NH Food Bank.
