Robert Gamache, 91 of Goffstown NH died peacefully on November 29th, 2017 after an 8 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Robert was born May 7th, 1926 in Manchester, NH to the late Arthur and Fabiola (Messier) Gamache. He grew up on his parents farm on the Goffstown Back Road and attended Catholic Schools on the West side of Manchester.
Robert served in the US Navy aboard the USS Quincy and was on board during D-Day and the bombardment of Japan. He fondly remembered meeting President Roosevelt when the Quincy brought FDR to and from the Yalta conference at the end of the war. After the war, he looked forward to the annual USS Quincy reunion and seeing his old shipmates, a tradition he maintained for more than 60 years.
Robert worked as a supervisor at Seal Tanning for more than 30 years before retiring and moving to Colebrook, NH where he built a log home and came out of retirement to work at Colebrook Feeds. Upon moving back to the Manchester area, he worked for nearly 20 years for Young's Furniture, delivering cabinets all over New England and beyond. He loved making deliveries to out of the way places in Maine and took pride in his ability to go anywhere without a map.
Robert loved fishing and never hesitated to hitch the boat trailer to his truck and head to Vermont to troll for pike and perch in the Otter Creek. He and his local fishing buddies knew every pond in southern NH. Robert was a scoutmaster for many years and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for more than 10 years.
Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan (Brooks) Gamache; 2 sons, Michael R. of Vermont and Daniel J. of Goffstown; grandson J. David of Burlington, VT and granddaughter Zandile R. of New York City; sisters Rita Chadwick and Helen Rivet of Bow, NH.;Teresa Rivet of Webster, NH; brothers Arthur of Manchester, Edward and Reynald of Goffstown, and George of Prentis, Maine; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Lucien, and sisters Yvette Sarette, Lillian Desrocher, and Bertha Kennedy.
Robert's family would like to thank his caregivers in Hospice and units A-1 and C-3 at the Hillsboro County Nursing Home and to all who visited Robert during his last months.
