Carlene Elizabeth (Watson) Rausch Hartshorn, 98, peacefully passed away early Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Trinity Center - Luther Park in Des Moines, IA. She will be moved to Goffstown, New Hampshire where services will be held at the French & Rising Funeral Home, 17 South Mast Street, Goffstown, N.H. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Goffstown. The family resided in Goffstown for more than 50 years.
Carlene was born April 30, 1920, in Sanford, ME, the only child of Murray Howard Jr. and Julia (Drown) Watson. The Watson family dates their colonial heritage to the 1620’s initially settling in Massachusetts and eventually moving into Maine and New Hampshire.
Carlene married Robert G. Rausch of Manchester, New Hampshire in 1942 and raised her family in Goffstown. After the early passing of Bob, her first husband and love at age 53 in 1974, she was blessed with a new partnership and married Clinton Harold Hartshorn of Goffstown N.H., (formerly of Vermont). Carlene and Clinton were joyfully married for more than 25 years until Clinton’s passing in 2001. Carlene went on to participate in the Goffstown community of senior citizens until her move to Des Moines, Iowa in 2008 to live closer to her daughter.
Carlene was a gracious, generous, and kind woman who, after graduating from Keene State Teachers College in 1942, settled in Goffstown to raise her family. In 1958 she partnered with her neighbor and fellow Keene graduate (Ginny Parkinson) to run the Mothers Club Kindergarten which was a community outreach program provided by the Congregational Church. Their Kindergarten was an outstanding success for more than 2 decades touching the lives of hundreds of families in Goffstown - teaching children who grew to become parents themselves and send their children to the same school.
A busy full-time mother, Carlene also participated actively in the civic and spiritual community of her beloved town. She was an active member of the Goffstown Congregational Church and served for many years as a member of the choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member and supporter of The Goffstown Historical Society. She assumed leadership roles in the Martha Washington Chapter of the Eastern Star as Grand Matron and as a class agent in the Alumni Association of Keene State College.
Carlene is survived by three loving children, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren: two sons; Robert G. Rausch Jr. and his wife Rose of Richmond, TX, and Carl W. Rausch of Hong Kong, China, one daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Rausch Fosburgh and her husband Richard of Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren; Kristen A. Rausch of TX, Robert G. Rausch III and his wife Kristin of TX, George Psinakis Rausch and his wife Lauren of CA, Maximilian Fallon Rausch of NY, Benjamin Watson Rausch and wife Kate of MA, Rev. Heather E.
